TENY HENSON was born into a family with an inclination in the arts. A graduate of Tondo Elementary and Torres High School, Henson later pursued a commercial arts degree with the International Correspondence School.
His interest in cartoons, already evident as a young boy, was further stimulated after winning six times at the “Bright Idea Contest” sponsored by a soft drinks company.
His admiration for the artistic flair of Tony S. Velasquez pushed him to seek out his idol, eventually landing a job at Velasquez’ advertising agency. There he met such notable creators as Damy Velasquez, Jesse Santos, Fred Carrillo, and Antonio Raulio. These same artists would be instrumental in shaping and honing his style.
His first work in comics came with the advent of Tikboy, and other advertising characters. (Advertisements in comic books at the time were commonly presented as comic strips.)
In 1950, Berong Barbero and Isang Ngiti Naman Dyan would mark his entry into serious comic illustration. This was followed by Pablo S. Gomez‘ Looban. Teaming up later with Fred Carrillo, Henson did Eskrimador, a costume story, and Basilio Baston. With Damy Velasquez, he did Pobres Park, and with Orlando Nandres, Teribol Terya.
Francisco V. Coching, sensing vast talents in the man, urged Henson to write and draw his own stories. Simple Living, Herculiz, 00Juan, Fabiola and Takaw-Ligaw were a few of his stories he created subsequently.
In the 1970s, Henson illustrated Lunggati, Haliparot na Puso, Sa Bawat Dangkal na Lupa…Dugo, and Kris. During the latter part of the decade, he illustrated such heart-warming characters as Tangoy, Ogoy, and Little Angel for Pilipino Funny Komiks. Both Little Angel and Ogoy won for him the SPIC (Society of Philippine Illustrators and Cartoonists) Award for Best Story/Cartoon.
From 1975 to 1980, Henson did artworks for DC Comics and Western Publishing for their short stories, mystery, horror, space stories and coloring books. Among the popular characters that Henson illustrated included Batman, Superman, Captain Marvel, Plastic Man, and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.
He worked for the Filmation Studios in Los Angeles, doing layouts for Blackstar, Gilligan’s Planet and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Aside from layouts, he was also responsible for doing materials for blackgrounds, presentations, character designs, scenarios and storyboards.
