His own father had been killed after refusing to give up his carabaos. Upon learning of all the problems in the town, Roland volunteers to be the new chief of police.

After being sworn into office, he puts three bandits in jail. Marte, the leader of the bandits confronts Roland but ends up being imprisoned as well. When Koronel Olivar, a high rank policeman, learns of Marte’s imprisonment, he asks his daughter Leona to bring a gift to Roland and keep him entertained, while the koronel sets Marte free.

During the war, Marte and Koronel Olivar had discovered a map from a Japanese, showing the location of a hidden treasure. Once released from prison, Marte, Koronel Olivar and their respective men begin the hunt for the treasure. The two groups headed by Marte and Koronel succeed in their hunt but end up having a shootout for the possession of the gold bars. In the end, only Marte survives while Roland comes and tries to return the gold bars to the treasury. Marte refuses and threatens to shoot Roland, but Betong, Marte’s son, shoots him instead. Roland ends up taking care of Betong with the help of the latter’s teacher, Miss Santos.

Bando, an uncouth man in many ways, is the caretaker of Don Favio’s hacienda. He always clashes with the beautiful Viola, daughter of Don Favio by his first marriage. Viola criticizes the way Bando treats the tenants of the hacienda and attempts to change his rude ways, which results in their constant bickering. Later, however, Bando discovers that Viola’s actions are merely a mask to hide her feelings for him. He also realizes that the reason he cannot tolerate her criticism is because he has feelings for her as well. Their quarrels bloom into great love, which later turns into bitter hatred. It begins when Bando becomes jealous of Dr. Vidal, son of Doña Torina by her first marriage, whose friendliness and mild manner wins the admiration of Viola and the rest of the tenants. Later, Dr. Vidal gets killed and Bando is blamed for his death. He escapes, and Viola, an expert markswoman, arms herself with a rifle and seeks him in his mountain refuge. Seeing Bando, she engages him in a deadly gun duel which becomes the end of their story.

Years later, Leonida comes back from Madrid a beautiful, sophisticated lady. Meanwhile, Don Teofilo’s rival, Don Alfonso Soldevas, has become the mayor of their town. Leonida learns about his corrupt ways and decides to flirt with him to win his confidence and uncover his wicked ways. She discovers the location of the mayor’s ill-gotten wealth and steals it, disguised as La Sombra. She distributes the money to the poor and releases the prisoners who were sentenced by Soldevas.

La Sombra hides in the house of Don Teofilo. However, the mayor finds out and demands that Don Teofilo hand over La Sombra, which the latter refuses to do. When soldiers come to round up Don Teofilo and his family, La Sombra come to their rescue and defeat the mayor’s men. The inspector general arrives and orders the arrest of Don Alfonso, and Don Teofilo is appointed as the new mayor.
