Kalabog en Bosyo

KALABOG EN BOSYO
by Larry Alcala
Pilipino Komiks, 1949-1983
Manila Times, 1984-1995

KALABOG EN BOSYO is one of Larry Alcala’s most enduring comic strips. It first appeared in Pilipino Komiks in 1947, easily making it the longest running serial ever by any Filipino cartoonist.

Decades before Alcala started hiding his likeness in his Slice of Life comics, he was already doing cameo roles in his Kalabog en Bosyo comic strips. At that time of course, instead of his bemoustached, bespectacled, profile with side burns, he rendered himself sporting a crew-cut—younger and about 100 pounds thinner.

An onomatopoeic Tagalog word, Kalabog refers to the thud sound similar to the impact made by a cat crashing down on a roof. The comic strip title is noted as among the earliest instances of the blending of Tagalog and English, something now known as Taglish. Kalabog was literally an overnight creation. Facing a deadline, Alcala was allotted four pages in Pilipino Komiks by Ramon Roces and Tony Velasquez of Ace Publications. Ang Kalabog (its original title) was born the following morning.

The comic misadventures of these two bungling detectives have been adapted into the silver screen twice, the first of which was the 1956 Sampaguita Pictures production that marked one of the earliest team-ups Filipino comedians Dolphy and Panchito.
