Bathala Apokalypsis

BATHALA APOKALYPSIS is a 7-part comic book mini-series that asks the question, “What if Superman had to deal with the Apocalypse?”Published under the Alamat Comics imprint, it is written by David Hontiveros and illustrated by Ace Enriquez, based on an idea from Gerry Alanguilan.

The project was actually conceived way back in 1997, but it wasn’t until recently that it finally materialized. The story itself is set in 1999, back when fears regarding the coming millenium and the supposed end of the world were prevalent. Despite the time frame, the story is perhaps no less relevant today, what with the current hysteria over the alleged Mayan doomsday prediction supposed to take place exactly 2 years from this very day. The Filipino Heroes League

THE FILIPINO HEROES LEAGUE
By Paolo Fabregas
Alamat Comics / Visprint Inc.

THE FILIPINO HEROES LEAGUE is about the struggles of a group of Filipino superheroes working with the Philippine government. Underfunded and undermanned, the heroes Invisiboy and Kidlat Kid together with veteran hero Flashlight lives in the old and almost abandoned building once occupied by the previous generation of FHL. They can’t even afford to fix their jeep, forcing them to ride a tricycle pedicab to get to the scene of battle. That is, if they are even called upon by the local cops. They are also kept in the dark, their heroism doesn’t even make it to the evening news. But that’s OK, because as Flashlight puts it, they “do it for the chicks.”

SKYWORLD tells the stories of a tikbalang prince who is in search of vengeance for the death of his father, a murdered Skygod that returns to present day Manila, and the Queen of the Asuang who unleashes the deadly Bakunawa (dragon) – all of these come together when Andoy, a crippled orphan, discovers that he has yet to fulfill a prophecy dating back to the time of Lapu-Lapu.

The prophecy tells us of an ancient tribe that traveled to our lands through land bridges. This tribe was made of warriors known as the Sons of Heaven. They were “fearsome warriors gifted with strength beyond mortal men, ruled by a code that was not of this earth.”  With them was an amulet that carried all the source of their power. The amulet was passed from one generation to the next. It was said that one day, a warrior of noble birth would rise and use the amulet to unite warring tribes. Plot of the Story.
The clandestine Batch-Serum Experiment of 1972 resulted to the birth of hundreds of super-powered Filipinos. There were also hundreds of unaccounted test-subjects that died.  Those that survived went underground and later resurfaced to become the country’s most wanted criminals.

In the late 1980s, Doktor Kamatayan instigated the infamous Mendiola Super-Hero Massacre.  More would have died if not for the arrival of Digmaan, a veteran Filipino superhero of World War II. Even though Doktor Kamatayan ripped off both of Digmaan’s arms during the fight, Digmaan managed to defeat the Doktor’s and his army of villains. The government funded Digmaan’s hospitalization and cyber-enhancements.  In return, they requested for Digmaan to head the organization of a special division of the Philippine National Police that would specifically deal with any super-human threat of crime.  Digmaan agreed as long as he had complete control on the people who would comprise his team. They are the super-soldiers of justice.  They are the enhanced-enforcers of the law.  They are the ULTRACOPS. [1]

Soon after a turning point in their friendship, Casey and Deio parted ways and strived to get on with their lives. Two years later, Casey contacts Deio and tries to pick up from where they left off. On that reunion night, they exorcise the demons bred by their two-year separation, and learn valuable lessons of friendship, acceptance, forgiveness, and love. [1]

Ang Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni ZsaZsa Zaturnnah

ANG KAGILA-GILALAS NA PAKIKIPAGSAPALARAN NI ZSAZSA ZATURNNAH  is a fictional comic book written and illustrated by Filipino creator and graphic designer Carlo Vergara. This is an Alamat Comic Book, published by Carverhouse Creations through Quest Ventures.

ZsaZsa Zaturnnah is considered by many readers and critics alike as a tour de force among the recent crop of Filipino comic books. Combining irreverent humor, pop culture sensibilities, and nuanced writing, ZsaZsa Zaturnnah has been positively received by readers of various age groups and economic backgrounds.

ZsaZsa Zaturnnah tells the story of Ada, a cynical resident of a small provincial town, who gains superhuman abilities through a stone that falls from the heavens. With the ability to transform into the voluptuous and powerful ZsaZsa Zaturnnah, Ada defends his hometown from dangerous otherworldly threats. Adding color to this simple tale is the fact that Ada is a homosexual, proprietor of his own quaint beauty salon. Joining him in his extraordinary adventure is his frilly-mouthed assistant Didi and his secret love Dodong. Because of strong language and suggestive imagery, the comic book is strictly for mature readers.

ZsaZsa Zaturnnah was first released in December 2002 as two-part limited series, and since then has been prominently featured in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Businessworld, Manila Standard, Art Quarterly Manila, Culture Crash, etc. as well as the television show Knowledge Power.

After winning a much-coveted National Book Award given out by the discriminating Manila Critics Circle, the two part “Ang Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni ZsaZsa Zaturnnah” has been compiled into a single trade paperback by Visprint Inc. [1]
