Joey D. Celerio

One of the most sought-after illustrators, JOEY D. CELERIO is a son of well-known composer-lyricist, Levi Celerio and brother to another popular komiks illustrator, Louie.

Joey has been a free-lance artist ever since he started out in the komiks craft in 1968. He worked in different advertising agencies as designer-artist while moonlighting as illustrator of short stories, first for the defunct Gold Star Publishing Corporation and G.Miranda & Sons Publishing Corporation.

The reading public began taking notice of Joey’s refreshing style, however, when he started doing novels for the Ace Publications, Inc. – first, Tom Duling by R. R. Marcelino, followed by Bubonica and Hello, Sino Ito? both by Helen Meriz. Branching out to the Atlas group of komiks, he illustrated Ruben R. Marcelino’s Rest in Peace, At Saka na Ako Luluha and Sa Dulo ng Panahon.

In 1973, he also had stints with the RAR Publishing House illustrating the Mars Ravelo novels, Bong-bong and Captain Barbell.

Things started really picking up for Joey, however, when he decided to devote more of his time for the Atlas Publishing Co., Inc. Teaming up with Gilda Olvidado, he illustrated Sinasamba Kita” for the Tagalog Klasiks, Kung Mahawi Man ang Ulap for the Espesyal Komiks, and Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin for Pilipino Komiks. He also provided the artwork for several of Nerissa Cabral‘s opuses: Modelong Tanso for the Pilipino Komiks, Karibal Ko ang Aking Ina for the Darna Komiks and Manyika for Rex Publications.

Under the Graphic Arts Service, Inc. komiks-magazines, he illustrated Pat V. ReyesPreciosa and SM, Mister Flo by Hal Santiago, and Blusang Itim by Elena M. Patron.

In 1979, Joey was chosen by a US-based publishing firm to illustrate Vampirella, a character appearing in an internalionally circulated comic book of the same title. He was also one of the nominees for Best Novel Illustrator, non-fantasy category, during the 1984 KOMOPEB Awards. [1]
